Outlaws place second

By Scott Wanish, sports editor
The Sun

Running up against the Fourth of July weekend, the Midwest City Outlaws plowed their way into the finals of the Olde South Plains Classic held at Rose State College.

The Outlaws spotted Putnam North seven early runs in the championship and it turned out to be too much of a hill to climb as North pulled out an 8-7 triumph in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Though Putnam North jumped out early with seven runs, Post 170 relief pitchers Zac Chase and Calyn Young both held North scoreless over eight straight innings. Chase fell to 5-2 getting tagged with the loss in the 10th frame and the Outlaws stood at 30-12 after the tournament.

Prior to the finals, Midwest City did to Arlington, Texas what Putnam North did to it. The Outlaws smoked out to an 8-0 lead before holding on for dear life in an 11-9 conquest.

Jim Miner (3-2) was the winner as JT Realmuto came in to pick up a save by tossing the final two innings.

Outlaw Cody Ferrell was a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in while Realmuto knocked in four runs and collected two hits. Tyler Kilmer, Brennan Murphy and Josh Balch all contributed run-scoring singles.

In the quarterfinals, Post 170 knocked out the Lubbock Blue Jays (Texas) 7-6 in 11 innings. Catcher Chad Carman doubled before Miner drove home the winning run with two out in the last of the 11th.

Midwest City was under pressure to force extra innings in the bottom of the ninth.

But Realmuto clutched up and cranked a long-distance solo home run to get even at 6-apiece.

Young (7-2) was the winning pitcher in relief duty going the final 2 1/3 innings.

In the Olde South Plains opener, the Outlaws blanked Edmond Santa Fe 9-nothing in a five-inning run-rule.

Young tossed a one-hitter as Ferrell banged out four hits and teammate Jordan Price added an additional three hits.

Game two was won by the identical score by Midwest City at 9-0 over the Moore Shockers.

Evan Green (3-0) equalled Young’s one-hitter and struck out five in a shortened contest due to the run-rule.

Four-year Outlaw athlete Carman out of Carl Albert High School knocked in three runs winding up 2-for-3. Fellow Outlaws Balch and Ferrell both finished 1-for-2 and Price drove in a pair with a base hit in the second inning.

In a 3-2 loss to the Topeka Stars (Kan.), Ferrell and Realmuto accounted for four of Midwest City’s seven total team hits.

After the loss, Post 170 drummed Spivey’s out of Oklahoma City 14-4.

Midwest City High School grad Justin Freer improved to a perfect 4-0 with the win.

On offense, Ferrell, Kilmer (2 RBIs) and Price (RBI 3B) each batted 2-for-3 and Carman (1-for-2) added a two-run home run.

The Outlaws will compete in the Elk City Tournament today through Sunday.
