Putnam City coach to take over girls position at Choctaw

Penni Young’s replacement as the head girls basketball coach at Choctaw High School is Putnam City’s head coach, 27-year-old Dandy Peeler.

Peeler took over a Putnam City program two years ago which won just three games. Last season she bumped the Lady Pirates up to the .500 mark and this season won over 20 games and lost to Midwest City in the Class 6A area championship and then ironically got knocked off by Choctaw in the area consolation finals.

Peeler got the job at Choctaw out of 25 applicants.

“I felt good about her positiveness toward our program,” said Choctaw Athletic Director Greg Skaggs. “We got to see her coaching at Putnam City and how she handled her team and how that team progressed.

“She has a positive attitude and we think she’ll be really good.”

Young coached at Choctaw only four years and made the state tourney half the time. The Lady Yellowjackets ended the 2007-08 season 15-12 with a first-round state loss to Tennessee-bound Allyssia Brewer and the Sapulpa Lady Chieftains 69-45 inside the Ford Center.

At Midwest City, RYAN HENSLEY has resigned as the head softball coach taking a position at Tinker Air Force Base.

“I got a good opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Hensley stated. “Better for spending more time with my wife (Leann) and my son (2-year-old Camden).

“I’d like to thank Craig Troxell (Midwest City’s head baseball coach) for all the knowledge I’ve learned from him and the good times we’ve had together.

“We built a good coaching staff (baseball & softball) up there. I’ll miss the friendships with Coach Troxell and Coach (Adam) Skokowski and the programs for sure. They all have my continued support.”

Hensley was also an assistant baseball coach with Skokowski under Troxell. Skokowski assisted Hensley on the softball field.
