TULSA —
Midwest City sophomore Carissa Levingston broke her own mother’s state record in the 200 meter dash while Justin Viewings and Jourdan Clark each won a pair of gold medals for Carl Albert at the State Class 5A-6A track and field championships at Tulsa East Central High School Saturday.
Toni Young of Del City and Tia Moore of Midwest City also added gold medals to the EastOC collection.
Levingston, who rounded into form at midseason and established the best time in the state in her specialty, sped to a 24.16 to qualify first in the 200 in Friday’s preliminaries, but came back Saturday with a blazing 23.89 to defeat defending state champion Skakila Wilkerson of Broken Arrow and erase the state record of 24.0, set by her mother, then Nina Thompson of John Marshall in 1980.
It’s neat to break her own mom’s record, Levingston says, but she thinks she can do better. "I have two more years to improve. I think I can run faster as I get stronger. Now everyone will be shooting for me," she said.
Viewings, a senior who had won medals at state since his freshman year, finally broke through to capture gold in the 400 with a 48.98 and after winning the 800 with a personal best of 1:58.07. Viewings upped his medal count to four by running a leg on the Titans’ 400 meter and 1600 meter relay teams. Teammate Tim Thomsen was sixth for a medal in the 800.
Clark won a gold medal in the 300 meters last spring as a freshman at Ada, but cashed in double gold in her first year as a Lady Titan, taking first in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.96 and then repeating as state champion in the 300 hurdles, taking the gold in a swift 45.20. Teammate Alexis Victorian got a sixth place medal in that event.
Joining Levingston in the victory circle for the Lady Bombers was shot put whiz Moore, who won her third straight gold medal with a heave of 44-8, four feet further than the runner-up Kylie Spurgeon of Owasso, the state discus record holder.
Levingston also picked up medals, running with Breanna Davis, Kayla Hill and Shanesha Taylor to take third in both the 800 and 1600 meter relay teams to pace the Lady Bombers to a fourth-place finish with 50 points. The Lady Bombers ran a 1:43.3 in the 800 and came back with a 4:00.18 in the 1600 meter relay with Levingston anchoring both events.
Carlie Brittain-Carpio picked up six points for MIdwest City with a third-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.
Young, also a standout on the Lady Eagles basketball team, cleared 5-8 again to easily outdistance the opposition in the high jump. Teammate Jasmere Love won a fourth-place medal in the 400 with a time of 58.78.
Love joined Olivia Crawford, Kevon Mukes and Shalesha Jones to win medals in two relays, taking fourth in both 400 and 800 relays.
The Del City 400 meter relay team of Jermie Robertson, Trevon Coleman, Cory Smith and DeMario Mitchell, picked up 12 points and bronze medals for a third-place finish in the 400 meter relay. Robertson also got a sixth in the 100 and De’Angelo Harris was fifth in the high jump.
The TITANS placed third in the 1600 meter relay with Trevon Porter, Alonzo Anderson, Sterling Wright and Daytwaion Lowe getting bronze in a time of 3:26.30 and also got fourth place medals with a time of 43.97 in the 400 meter relay.
Hurdler Roger Loyd finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.48.
CHOCTAW’S Lady Yellowjackets picked up some medals in the field event competition with Paige Ryan and Bridgett Reynolds going 5-6 in the high jump, Brittany Barron tying for fifth in the pole vault and Madison Billings and Jessica Peacock going 5-6 in the discus.
