John Evert Short

John Evert Short, 88, passed away Dec. 7, 2006. He was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Sentinel, to Samuel Earl and Margaret Melinda (Jackson) Short. While he was an infant, his parents moved to Mangum to establish a business. He grew up in the town and graduated from Mangum High School in 1937. He attended Oklahoma A&M and Southwestern State College, but received “greetings from the President” and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He received training at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma from March 19-June 19, 1941. He was assigned to Battery C, 57th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division at Ft. Ord, Calif. He married Rhonda Francis Nov. 2, 1941. In July of 1942, he was selected to go on a cadre to reactivate the 95th Infantry Division at Camp Swift in Texas. The division trained stateside for three years and seven months, then saw combat with Patton’s 3rd Army for 11 months, serving in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. After discharge from the army in 1945, he lived in Midwest City from 1946 until his death. He owned and operated a business in partnership with his father and was also a civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force. In the early years of Midwest City, he served as a city councilman. He was a 50-plus-year member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He enjoyed golfing and served as president of the Tri-Seniors Golf Association. He was instrumental in establishing the 95th Division Memorial. He loved to travel and spend time with his family. He is survived by Rhonda Short, his wife of 65 years; two sisters, Peggy Hoover and Betty Burris; a daughter, Sylvia Johnson; a son, John Robert Short; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at Wickline United Methodist Church in Midwest City. Services were under the direction of Paylor Funeral Home.



Gertrude Estelle Guy

Gertrude Estelle Guy, longtime resident of Midwest City, passed away Dec. 25, 2006 at the age of 78. She was born Feb. 2, 1928, in Yukon, to Homer C. and Helen E. (Belyeu) Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Raymond H. Guy; and her parents. Gertrude is survived by her children, Ramona Porter, Terry Moore, Raymond Guy, Kathleen “Kathy” Jacobs, and Tammy Blackwell; brother, Warren Davis; and sister, Ruth Morse; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends. Services honoring Gertrude’s life will be held 2 p.m. Dec. 29 in the Christian Life Fellowship Church at 1400 N.W. 12th in Moore. Interment followed at Arlington Memory Gardens. Services were under the direction of Caskets Inc.



E. Paul Enix

E. Paul Enix was one of the pioneers of modern secondary school instrumental music in the state of Oklahoma. In a career spanning five decades, Enix was responsible for the education of thousands of instrumental and string students. His training and guidance lead scores of his former students to follow him into musical education careers in colleges and secondary schools from Pennsylvania to California. Edwin Paul Enix was born in Ottawa County, Oct. 21, 1917. He graduated from Miami High School in 1933 at the age of 16. Attending Oklahoma A&M College, he graduated in 1937 with honors. He was named the “Outstanding Graduating Music Major.” After graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Juanita Sinclair, of Stillwater. Paul began his teaching career in 1937 in Konawa as the Director of Band and Orchestra. At that time, he was one of the youngest accredited teachers in the history of the state of Oklahoma. In the following years, he moved to similar positions in Pauls Valley and Ardmore. In 1946, following his military service where he was honored as the director of the 639th Army Air Corps Band, he was named the Director of Instrumental Music at East Central State College in Ada. In 1952, he left East Central to teach at Chickasha High School and the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. Later, in 1959, he moved to Midwest City having been named Director of Instrumental Music at Midwest City High School. He served in that position until he had to take medical retirement in 1979. During his storied career, Enix’s bands complied an extraordinary record of Superior Ratings at Regional and State scholastic music contests. On numerous occasions, his bands were named as the ‘Outstanding Band’ in State and Southwest Regional music festivals. One of his finest honors came in 1971 when he was awarded the A.R. McAllister “MAC” Award, the highest national honor to be awarded to a Band Director in the U.S. This award was presented on national television at the halftime of the “Game of the Century” Oklahoma vs. Nebraska in Norman. Paul was later inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. He was also honored as the first active band director to be named to the Oklahoma Bandmasters Hall of Fame. Paul received several honors within the Mid-Del School District as Outstanding Teacher and a member of the district's Hall of Fame. Following his retirement in 1979, Mr. Enix continued to stay active in instrumental music through judging at music contests and festivals in the tristate area. He was also a popular guest clinician traveling to universities and high schools around the region. In his later years, he served as the Conductor, then Music Director, of the Oklahoma City Community Orchestra. Services for Mr. Enix were held Dec. 19, 2006, at the Wickline United Methodist Church in Midwest City where he had been a member for more than 45 years. He was laid to rest in the Arlington Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City. Paul is survived by his son, Jim S. Enix of Philadelphia; his wife, Citadel; and their son, Jeff. They would like to take this opportunity to offer their sincere thanks to his caregivers and the many family friends, colleagues, former students and members of the healthcare community who tirelessly gave of their time and efforts to support Mr. Enix. Plans are under way to celebrate the life and career of this extraordinary man at a memorial event to be held in Midwest City in early 2007. Bridgette Marie Smith

Bridgette Marie Smith, 42, of Midwest City, passed away Dec. 13, 2006. She was born Dec. 23, 1963, in Dallas, to Fred and Dolores (Cobb) Maupin. She is survived by her three daughters, Chasity Blankenship, Randa Smith and Ricki Smith; Tony Miller and his three children, Michael and Matthew Miller and Stacie McCormick; four grandchildren; her bubba, Rick Blankenship; and a sister-in-law, Melinda. She has preceded in death by her parents and her grandparents, Earl and Beluah (Eddie) Cobb. A service honoring Bridgette’s life was held Dec. 16 at Victory Church. Burial was at Southland Memorial Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. Services were under the direction of Caskets Inc.



Sorga K. “Rosie” Georg

Sorga K. “Rosie” Georg was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Vienna, Austria, prior to World War I. Her father was killed in that conflict. She relocated to the U.S. in December 1951. Settling in central Texas and became a U.S. citizen on her 80th birthday, voting for the first time at age 84. She lived in Texas until 1998, when she moved to Oklahoma to live with her daughter. She was preceded in death by two husbands; five children, three at birth and her eldest son, Fred Pfann in July 2003 and middle daughter, Marie Eaton in July 2004. She is survived by her daughters, Katharina Stachowiak, of Midwest City, Susan White, of Temple, Texas, Norma Jackson, of Belton, Texas, and son, Peter Georg, of Temple, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She cherished her family and was much loved in return and will be greatly missed by all. Services were 2 p.m. Dec. 30, 2006, at the Candlewood Chapel at Ford Funeral Service.



Lieselotte Turnbull

Lieselotte Turnbull, 79, of Midwest City, passed away Dec. 23, 2006. Lieselotte was born in Ulm, Germany, March 16, 1927, to Arthur and Veronika Scheurmann. Lisa came to the U.S. in 1952 and settled in Midwest City. She worked in customer service at the First National Bank of Midwest City for 25 years and retired in 1990. She moved into Autumn House about five years ago and was a member of Wickline United Methodist Church and enjoyed crocheting. Turnbull is survived by a daughter, Monika Mackey; and her grandson, Trent “Boomer” Mackey, both of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; and many other extended family and friends. Memorial services were 10 a.m. Dec. 29, 2006, at the Paylor Dignity Memorial Chapel.



Jimmie Evelyn Culbert

Jimmie Evelyn Culbert, 76, of Nicoma Park, passed away Dec. 26, 2006. Jimmie was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Chandler, to John Thomas and Nellie Flora Harrold Jackson. She graduated from Chandler High School and moved to Midwest City in 1966. Jimmie retired from Tinker in 1976. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and member of the Rainbows. She is survived by her husband, Vernon; stepson, Virgil Munsell, of Oklahoma City; a niece, Rose Marie Dixon, of Cortez, Colo.; and two stepgrandsons, Brady and Coby. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Dec. 29, 2006, at the Paylor Dignity Memorial Chapel. Burial followed at the Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler.



Delorse “Dee” Moore (Been)

Delorse “Dee” Moore (Been), 67, died Dec. 26, 2006, in Del City. She was born Dec. 24, 1939, in Tiger Mountain, to John and Opal Been. She moved to the Oklahoma City area in 1955 where she resided for 52 years. She was a meat wrapper and later obtained her CDL license. In her later years, she was a home health caregiver and had a lawn care business. She was a member of the Teamsters Union and Parents Without Partners. Some of her hobbies included bingo, yard work and family and friends. She loved to talk, sing and listen to music. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Elizabeth Taylor and Alma Jean Winfrey. She is survived by her children, Debbie Damon and her husband Mark, of Del City, Charla Gray, of Bethany, and W. Charles Moore and his wife Crystal, of Midwest City; grandchildren, Mark and Clifford Damon, Michael and Shawn Massengale, Christie Wire and Tamara, Charlie, Destiney and Jesse Moore; 14 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Barney Been, of Oklahoma City, and Wanda Haley, of Supulpa; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was 11 a.m. Dec. 29, 2006, at the Church of Christ in Henryetta. Interment was at Westlawn Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home.
