Jones keeps up with its history

Jim Selders, volunteer curator for the Jones Oklahoma Historical Society Museum, has found some of the most recent items for the museum collection online.

“I go in and screen e-bay once in awhile to see what’s on there,” said Selders. One of his recent finds is a letter written in 1902 from Jones City.

Although the members of the Jones Oklahoma Historical Society took in several items when they began collecting in 2006-2007, they are still on the search for items that more locally represent their hometown.

Everything from old photographs, old newspapers to period clothing are currently part of the museum collection. Items taken from founder Charles G. Jones’ home are also part of the attractions.

In just a few years, the volunteers of the society has turned the old train depot around.

They moved into the old building, which at that point was used as an annex by the Catholic church, in 2005.

“We took it basically back to kind of what it was before,” said John McEwen, president of the historical society.

Since taking over the building, they have created a Flag Pole Pavilion on the corner of the building backed by a wall of bricks purchased by individuals.

They also plan on expanding the brick wall to the left for individuals and to the right for veterans. The bricks are $35; forms can be picked up at the museum.

The society has also put together a research desk that contains binders of information such as family histories, famous alumni from Jones and town history.

Every year, the society hosts a land-run re-enactment for the fourth graders.

Selders said the museum is usually open every Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Volunteers are also ready and willing to open the museum for special occasions. Class and family reunions frequently use the museum, Selders noted. The museum is also a widely-visited attraction on Oldtimer’s Day.

To raise money for the museum, the historical society holds fundraisers throughout the year. Every April, they host a garage sale. Last year’s sale brought in over $900. On Nov. 15, an auction will be held for the society at 6 p.m. at the community center in Jones.

When funds become available, the historical society is planning on constructing an additional building for storage and museum items as well as a gazebo/picnic area for residents to use.

To donate Jones items or make donations to the society, contact Jim Selders at 399-3144, John McEwen at 399-2228 or Earlene Carpenter, vice president of the historical society, at 399-5434.
