Junior-high neighbors reach out to Jones school with sale

Alicia Winters hoped to instill in Nicoma Park Junior High School students a better understanding of the importance and joy of giving back.

The English teacher applied for and received a grant on behalf of the school in the fall and the school is now wrapping up the year with a final act of kindness, a fundraiser to benefit Jones High School students whose school burned down in December.

Community members will drop off donated items for the sale from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday. The sale will take place in the Nicoma Park Junior High gymnasium and will run from 6 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The idea was David Johnson’s. Johnson said that the school was a neighbor and had need.

“They’re just a neighboring school that needed some help,” he said.

Winters said the purpose of events such as the garage sale, the Winter Wishes assembly in December and the Random Acts of Kindness Week in February, was to make students aware of their ability to do for others.

“I think that the purpose behind the grant is very important for our young people to have the opportunity to give back,” she said.

Both Johnson and Winters agree that junior high and high school is the time in one’s life that it is easiest to forget about doing for others.

Though there will be no grant next year, Winters said she hopes that the “truly” random acts that she has begun to see from students at the school will continue to take place next year.

“I’ve been really impressed by how some of our students have taken on random acts of kindness for themselves and with nothing in return,” the English teacher said.
