Dignitaries to join Shriners, armed forces for annual Del City parade

Those wanting to see Congresswoman Mary Fallin riding a horse-drawn carriage pulled by a black and white Clysdale need go no further than Del City.

Fallin will be just one of the many dignitaries taking part in Del City’s 23rd annual Armed Forces Day and Shriner’s Parade. Others to take part include Tinker officials Maj. Gen. Loren Reno, Brig. Gen. Lori J. Robinson and Col. Mark Correll; Capt. David Harrell, representing the 1345th Transportation Co. of the Oklahoma National Guard; state legislators Rep. Scott Inman and Sen. Jim Reynolds; Oklahoma County Commissioners Willa Johnson and Brent Rinehart; and Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. May 10 underneath Interstate 40 on Sunnylane Road. It will proceed south on Sunnylane and turn east on Southeast 29th Street, ending on Linda Lane around noon, according to parks and recreation supervisor Steve Berner.

Berner said the parade would include a Ft. Sill’s Field Artillery Half Section, a horse-drawn artillery piece that will be fired once during the parade and also at the dedication of the Sooner Road Memorial Monument. The Del City High School band also will take part.

Grand marshal will be Bucky Oliver, a member of the Del City Historical Society.

After the parade, a ceremony will be held at the Williams parking lot, where plaques will be given in different categories for the floats and other entries in the parade.
