Ron’s offers local eats and friendly service

“People like coming here because we’re friendly,” said Sherrie DeRousse, a server at a local Midwest City eatery that is happy to welcome the regulars who frequent their establishment. Michelle Lee, owner of Ron’s Hamburgers and Chili, agreed with DeRousse. She described the atmosphere of the joint as an “old-fashioned diner.” A place where the town can gather and support one another. She’s put that philosphy to work by allowing her customers to hang their business signs around the restaurant, very much localizing the restaurant.

Home cookin: Mexican lasagna

consider myself a born again eater. No longer do the chicken fingers and Hot Pockets of my youth fulfill me. You might say that my pallet has grown up. Just like my parents said it would.Onions? You betcha. Crawfish? Who knew, but now I do, delicious. Calf fries? Let’s not get crazy now.But as a proprietor of tasteism for most of my life, it’s hard to figure out what I like. It’s a tad too expensive to try all these new exotic dishes at restaurants, and I’ve never been much of a cook.I like trying new things. So now, once a month in our Food section, I will expand my tastes. It seems every family has a signature dish, and I want to try them all. I can’t guarantee I’ll like it, but I’ll give it a shot. No tomatoes please. In this first installment of Home Cookin, I joined the Lesser family, Dwayne, Lori, Scott and Taylor, for a dining experience at their Midwest City home.

Don't poke fun at tasty plant

It might not be for everyone but for some, pokeweed is a sort of forgotten delicacy.“It grows wild and for most people, if you grew up out in the country, then you grew up with it,” said Linda Lane, owner and operator of Meadowlark Gardens in Mount Vernon, who sells wild pokeweed at the Webb City Farmers’ Market.

Column: Scammon church known for food

I’m not one of those people who like to tell other people what to do, but I have some advice for the folks who run that Food Channel on TV.Send a camera crew to Scammon, Kan., this Sunday. You think Rachael Ray knows how to cook? You think that hot, blonde Sandra Lee can cook? You think that Paula Deen knows her way around a kitchen? Well, no disrespect meant, but I’m sorry they’re all kitchen hacks. At least when compared with the cooks in and around Scammon.

Feel the luck o’ the Irish with traditional dish

Long ago it was hailed as a delicacy, one reserved for royalty. Today, corned beef is regarded in native Ireland as a peasant dish, much too ordinary to be served on a national holiday. In America, however, corned beef and cabbage is one of the most popular dishes served in homes and pubs across the country on St. Patrick’s Day.
