  • Don't poke fun at tasty plant
It might not be for everyone but for some, pokeweed is a sort of forgotten delicacy.
“It grows wild and for most people, if you grew up out in the country, then you grew up with it,” said Linda Lane, owner and operator of Meadowlark Gardens in Mount Vernon, who sells wild pokeweed at the Webb City Farmers’ Market.

  • Flowers aren’t just for picking

Soaring food prices, triggered by rising energy costs and decreased wheat supplies, have public school officials here bracing for the highest price hikes for school lunches in years.

  • Column: Scammon church known for food
I’m not one of those people who like to tell other people what to do, but I have some advice for the folks who run that Food Channel on TV.
Send a camera crew to Scammon, Kan., this Sunday. You think Rachael Ray knows how to cook? You think that hot, blonde Sandra Lee can cook? You think that Paula Deen knows her way around a kitchen? Well, no disrespect meant, but I’m sorry they’re all kitchen hacks. At least when compared with the cooks in and around Scammon.

  • Feel the luck o’ the Irish with traditional dish
Long ago it was hailed as a delicacy, one reserved for royalty.
Today, corned beef is regarded in native Ireland as a peasant dish, much too ordinary to be served on a national holiday. In America, however, corned beef and cabbage is one of the most popular dishes served in homes and pubs across the country on St. Patrick’s Day.

  • For some produce, winter means peak freshness
A whopping two-thirds of all Americans aren’t getting enough fruits and veggies daily, according to two university studies last year.

  • Heart healthy food: Easy recipes
The following are heart healthy recipes for women, as recommended by the American Heart Association. They are sample recipes from the AHA’s cookbook, Light and Easy Recipes. To find additional heart healthy recipes, visit the website at www.americanheart.org.
